Morang Region No. 3: How heavy is Sunil Sharma for Bhanubhakta will be discussed here in details.
Under the House of Representatives, Morang Region No. 3 is a region with significant left-wing public opinion. This area is mostly won by the left wing. However, while saying this, the public opinion of the Congress is also getting stronger in that area.
In the first Constituent Assembly election of 2064, Savitri Kumar Kafle, the leader of the Maoist center, won from here. Dilip Gachchdar of Congress won from here in the second Constituent Assembly election of 070. In 1974, UML’s Bhanubhakta Dhakal was elected again from the Left Alliance.
In the previous elections, this area was divided into 5, 3 and 4 areas. Many people have also said that when determining the current Morang region number 3, it was determined to concentrate the left-wing public opinion. At present, Congress does not seem weak in that area.
Dhakal and Sharma have the same grip In the local elections of 2074, the votes of the left wing were twice that of the Congress. In the federal election of the same year, Sunil Sharma, the owner of Nobel Medical College, who contested again from the Congress, almost won. Sharma succeeded in reducing the two-fold difference of local level votes to 1900 votes. Similarly, Sooymaraj Rai of Congress won in one of the two state assembly constituencies in that area.
Sunil Sharma was a candidate for the House of Representatives from the Congress in the 2074 election. He had devised a strategy to attract votes by conducting many health camps through Nobel Medical College. The plan was largely successful.
In the upcoming elections, Sharma is also the candidate of Congress. There is no reason to stop Sunil Sharma from becoming a candidate, except if the party chairman Sher Bahadur Deuba gives that area to another party of the ruling coalition. Because now the Congress leaders are of the opinion that UML cannot be won if another candidate is made in that area.
Sharma has conducted hundreds of health camps using Nobel Medical College’s manpower for the past 5 years to win elections from that area. He has donated free ambulances to most of the wards in his area. He has also given free treatment to some disabled patients in Nobel and he is also investing heavily in Bhajan Kirtan Mandali, Math Mandir. Sharma is working by setting up an unannounced help desk in Nobel Hospital targeting the patients of Morang area number 3.
On the other hand, the establishment party from the Congress is trying to move leader Gopal Thapa forward. However, Thapa himself says that he did not think about it. “I have not thought like that now, we have to win the election, we don’t just stand up, we decide to win,” said Thapa.
On the other hand, Bhanubhakta Dhakal, who is very close to UML president KP Sharma Oli, was unpopular during the previous elections. After failing to win in his home district, Tehrathum, he chose Morang 3 and there were widespread rumors that he was a tourist candidate. However, now Dhakal has told those close to him, “Even though the party leadership was on my side before, all the workers were not satisfied, but this time the leadership is also on my side and I don’t see a situation where the workers are looking for my alternative.”
What Dhakal said is also true. The problem of Sukumwasi that he raised at that time is there. Many of his promises are yet to be fulfilled. However, in terms of organization, Dhakal has strengthened his grip within the UML in that area. He is also very good at listening to people’s complaints and in the field. Some have also said that efforts are being made to bring UML’s Standing Committee member Guru Baral forward as an alternative to Dhakal. However, Baral has not yet wanted to tell the matter openly.
I am a member of the standing committee, whether to be a candidate or not is discussed in the internal meetings of the party, it is not ethical for me to campaign outside,’ says Baral, ‘Rather than what the workers below say, the party meeting decides who to be a candidate for. However, Baral, a permanent resident of Biratnagar, contested in the second Constituent Assembly of 2070 in that region. However, he was defeated by Congress candidate Dilip Gachchdar.
On the other hand, UML leader Dhakal also says that he will present his views in the party meeting. “I will talk about whether to choose the same region in the election or not,” he says, “why do a lot of things now, we will finalize the candidates by August.” However, Dhakal is expressing his intention to become a candidate from the same area again with party leaders and workers.
Contradictions may cause problems for Sharma Sharma was the Congress candidate in the previous elections. However, this time Sharma is also becoming a candidate from the Shekhar Koirala side of the Congress. Some local Congress leaders are dissatisfied with Sharma because of his interference in ticket distribution in the local level elections 2079.
The Koirala-Sharma party tried to take away the ticket of the then chief of Sundarharaincha Shiv Dhakal and give it to Bhakti Prasad Sitaula. However, Dhakal went with Sher Bahadur Deuba and directly brought the ticket in his name. However, Dhakal was defeated by UML. Congressmen are estimating that Dhakal will not cooperate in the upcoming elections saying that Shekhar-Sunil had a hand in their defeat.
Similarly, Sanjay Bhattarai, who was nominated by the Koirala party as their candidate, was defeated in Kanepokhari rural municipality. The Deuba side had been saying that they should fight the election by forming an alliance. The Koirala party and especially Sunil Sharma in that area nominated Bhattarai without the advice of the Deuba party. Some people say that the group from the Deuba side of Kanepokhari will openly try to defeat Sharma.
Similarly, for the Koirala side, the possibility of a positive alliance in Morang is less likely. It cannot be said that the Maoists, Jaspa and CPN United Socialists will not feel the anger that they had to lose in the local elections without an alliance. Even now, the Koirala side is saying that there should be no alliance. It seems that Sharma will be uncomfortable if the situation is like this. Compared to that, Dhakal will become a unanimous candidate from UML, and since he will be more involved at the local level than last time, it seems that he can be stronger in the competition.
The morale of UML and Dhakal is high because they won the majority of the wards of Kanepokhari, Belbari, Sundarharaincha in the local elections 2079, and they won the chiefs and presidents of the three municipalities.
From the Maoist center, Constituent Assembly member Savitri Kumar Kafle, central member Geeta Timsina, leaders Lal Bahadur Susling Magar, Khem Bhattarai, Tilak Rai and Vinita Ghimire are discussed from that area. However, the leaders of the Maoist center said that many aspirants have not made up their mind to contest the election as their party will get only one provincial assembly seat.
Results of local elections 2079 In the local elections, UML won in 14 out of 26 wards in Morang Region No. 3. UML has won 4 out of 6 wards in Sundarharaincha Municipality, 5 out of 8 wards in Pathari Shanishchare Municipality, 3 out of 4 in Kanepokhari and 2 out of 8 wards in Belbari Municipality.
Similarly, Nepali Congress has won 2 wards in Sundhararaincha, 3 in Pathari Shanishare, 1 in Kanepokhari and 5 in Belbari, totaling 11 wards. An independent candidate has won in one ward of Belbari.
According to the opinion of the ward chairman who came to the local level in that area, it seems that the coalition party will have some ease this time, compared to that, it seems that the UML should be able to win. In that region, the coalition parties Nepali Congress, Maoist Center, CPN United Socialists and Jaspa get 46 thousand 607 votes. UML has 37 thousand 410 votes.
When fighting alone, UML is ahead of Congress by only a few hundred votes. Congress alone has 36 thousand 916 votes in that region. While the Maoist Center has 7,337 votes, the CPN Unified Socialists and Janata Samajwadi have not crossed 2,000 votes.
Look at the details of the ward-wise votes in that area in the statistics

Similarly, in the same constituency, Sooymaraj Rai of the Congress got 20 thousand 299 votes in the same constituency, while Gita Timsina, the leader of the CPN Maoist Center, who became a candidate from the left alliance, came second with 19 thousand 399 votes.
